A major area of activity at the Center is in the field of alcohol and drug impaired driving (DUI, and DUID). Dr Barry Logan has worked in this field for many years and is active in organizations such as the SOFT Drugs and Driving Committee, the International Council on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety (ICADTS), and the Transportation Research Board (TRB) of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.
Areas of interest include the effects of specific drugs on driving, relating observed patterns in driving that led to crashes or arrests, with behavioral indicators of impairment and toxicology data. In addition, the Foundation played a key role in the development of guidelines for laboratories performing DUID testing. This collaboration with the National Safety Council’s Alcohol, Drugs and Impairment Division (ADID) can be seen HERE.
The Center currently has initiatives in collaboration with the National Safety Council though which it supports a Forensic Toxicology Fellow, and a grant from the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety (AAFTS) examining issues related to cannabis and driving impairment brought to the fore by the spread of medical marijuana and marijuana legalization.
